“To create a community where everyone thrives’ - ‘Hangaia te hāpori, kia puāwaitia ai ngā iwi katoa’

The Te Puke  Maketū Kai Resilience group is a collective of local people and organisations who have joined together to facilitate practical, educational, and social community-led initiatives that improve food security in the area.

The group’s vision is guided by Mana Kai Mana Ora (2021) and the Te Puke Maketū Food Resilience Strategy developed in 2025.

“Communities will be kai secure, and all people will have access to healthy, culturally appropriate, and affordable kai. Our local food system will be environmentally responsible, resilient, and supported by ecosystems that are flourishing because of responsible land and water stewardship”.

    Te Āhuareka - Play Trailer

Thanks to the incredible support of the Tū Manawa Fund, our vision of creating a Community Play Trailer has become a reality. Through our involvement in youth events across Te Puke, we were given the opportunity to apply for funding—and we're thrilled to now have a mobile trailer packed full of fun, adventure, and opportunities for our community. Our trailer has been named Te Āhuareka, a name that reflects the heart of what this project is all about. Te Āhuareka describes the comfortable, uplifting feeling that comes through enjoyment and entertainment. It isn't just about the activities or games themselves—it's about the feeling they create. A sense of happiness, belonging, laughter, and connection. Our goal was simple: create a resource that brings people together. Te Āhuareka has been designed to support events, celebrations, schools, community groups, and neighbourhood gatherings, making it easier than ever to add fun, connection, and active play wherever it's needed.
We believe play has the power to create lasting memories, strengthen communities, and encourage healthy, active lifestyles. By giving tamariki, rangatahi, and whānau the chance to try something new, connect with others, and enjoy inclusive play experiences, we're helping build a stronger, more vibrant Te Puke. A huge thank you to the Tū Manawa Fund for believing in our vision and helping make it happen. Their support has enabled us to create a community resource that will bring people together for years to come. We can't wait to see Te Āhuareka travelling throughout our community, creating moments of joy, encouraging new experiences, and leaving every event with that special feeling its name represents.
